History behind The Manek Chowk | History of Manek Chowk

Manek Chowk, Heart of the Food Lovers. This become a vegetable market in the morning, jewellery market in Afternoon, and  food stalls in the Night around 8 pm. :)

Manek chowk is named after 15th century "saint Baba Maneknath".
Baba Maneknath was a famous hindu saint of that time.

Ahmed shah wants to build a new capital "Bhadra Fort" in 1411.

Baba maneknath interruped Ahmed shah to build a new capital.

Each day Baba Maneknath weave a mat while the fort walls were being built.

At every Night he unravel that mat.

one day, magically walls of fort bring down.


when this was discovered, Ahmed shah invited Baba Maneknath to Prove his power by putting himself into a small jar.




When he did this, Ahmed Shah sealed and buried the jar.


On the other account he helped the king to locate the site from where the construction of fort started. Under his advise 

the architect of city walls Ahmed Khattu changed the layout of city.

He was buried alive or took samadhi on the river island when Sabarmati river was passing through the city under Fernandez Bridge. 

The first quarter of the city, Manek Chowk, named after him and the memorial temple is situated there.

The first bastion of  the fort named after him, called Manek Burj, situated at the east end of Ellis Bridge.

The saint is revered in north and central Gujarat. Bharathari near Thasra in Kheda district also have memorial along with
Baba Maneknath temple

his horse dedicated him and is considered the petron saint of the village. There is a temple at Latol near Danta in

Banaskantha district is located near the cave in the foothill where the saint believed to have meditated.

So, This is how the Famous Manek Chowk get its name from "Baba Maneknath" :)
